RCA Dome
The RCA Dome opened in 1984 as the Hoosier Dome at a cost of $82 million. Unlike most domed stadiums, the RCA Dome was built by the city as a much-needed expansion to a convention center, not as a stand-alone sporting venue. It had permanent seating for 60,500 and covered 7 ¼ acres or two city blocks. The air-supported roof was 193’ high and weighed 257 tons.
The last event held in the RCA Dome was FDIC in April 2008.
Soon, the walls will come down as the NFL Indianapolis Colts take their place in Lucas Oil Stadium. After LOS opens, the dome will be demolished and the convention center will expand within that footprint.
